I think its time to resign myself to new price points. Loss leaders are still out there but harder to fine and I am running through things quickly. I miss 3/$1 boxes of pasta at Meijer, 10/10 cheese, peanut butter and taco chips at Kroger and any kind of sale on my much loved potatoes.
With the price of gas its been easier and in many cases cheaper to stock up with a once a month trip to Costco. Cheese is much cheaper at our Costco ( even Aldi is higher), Romaine 6 packs are better (Meijer went up recently, had been the same price for about a year) and even pasta has been the same price as most of the alternatives. It makes me wonder if its worth the effort to even look at the ads this month!
Meijer actually has a decent sale this week and I ordered some coupons on Sunday to help score a few bargains this week. I can shop while running errands on Friday and Saturday to save on gas. We used to be close to all the stores but now we are about 25 minutes away from where we like to shop.
I really want to find a great sale on potatoes. My kids love twice baked potatoes in their lunchboxes. We usually freeze large quantities of them and also I love, love potato soup. I am also worried about vegetable prices when all the summer deals go away. I am completely out of frozen broccoli and green beans. It usually takes 2 of the 1 lb bags per dinner so I want to try The large bags of the GFS and Costco brands to see if they will be be a good deal for us. I really like the sweet corn at GFS but I did not care for the mixed vegetable blends I have tried there.
Costco is new here and I have not tried the frozen vegetable they carry yet.
What are your favorite frozen or canned veggies or what do you turn to when you run out of fresh options?

I started buying the big frozen bag of Pink Eyed Purple Hull peas and butterbeans at Walmart. They taste just as good as when we put up peas and beans from the farmers market without all the work of shelling. I also like to get the McKenzie(?) frozen corn when it is on sale. It is in chubs that look like and ear of corn. It tastes like the corn we put up when you scrape the cob to milk it. I also buy the frozen large generic bags of broccoli and corn cobbetts and California blend veggies at Walmart. At Sams, they had HUGE boxes of french fries and sweet potato fries. I want to get some of the sweet potato fries. I buy edemmeme at Sams.
I made up twice baked potatoes after seeing your post on freezing them. I bought a large bag of baking sized potatoes at Sams and cooked a whole oven full and made them up to freeze. I still have a lot of potatoes so am planning on doing some more today. I have a smaller bag of potatoes that I am going to dice and blanch and put up to either make soup or put in a casserole or make mashed potatoes.
I love to shop at the Farmer's Market for fresh fruits and veggies. Today I purchased a few extra Bell Peppers to go in the freezer for future potatoes. I also picked up new potatoes for just $.60 :) I'll be missing the Farmer's Market this Winter.
Southerner- I have never had edamame, I will keep a eye out for it and the other items you mentioned.
Nico- There is a little stand nearby I have been meaning to stop at, I better hurry before its to late.
I love potato soup and twice-baked potatoes, too! Talk about comfort food, LOL!
As far as frozen, we only like corn, broccoli and cauliflower. I hate peas and asparagus. I prefer most vegetables fresh, when possible. It does get pricey in the off season, though, doesn't it?
On the other hand, remember this: when broccoli is 3.99 a pound, check the unit prices on some of the 'grocery' items you buy (like cereal or crackers) and you might be surprised that the broccoli is actually a good buy. Try not to look at the unit price of spices, though--you might choke.(I'm not sure where I first read that tip--maybe it was here!)
Ooooh, you know what else is good, and probably reasonable? Sweet potatoes! I like them with butter and salt rather than the gooey way. Hmmm...think I'll add some to my list this week.
I really miss the great loss leaders around here too. Since my kids have gotten bigger and their appetites have grown it takes so much more to fill them up. So I really miss 10/$10 peanut butter, cheese, etc.
Our stores did just have a good stock up on frozen veggies... .79 for 16 oz.
I love Steamfresh Frozen veggies, but will only buy them if on sale for $1/ea (which used to be the regular price!)
